From the first postwar riots to the return of Confederate exiles to the impeachment of Andrew Johnson to the highly contested and consequential election of 1876, and up to and through the present, Civil War by Other Means offers a new narrative history of modern American democracy that proves that our current moment—in which America is wrestling with competing visions of democracy, race, and freedom—is not unique, nor is the breaking point that has, or is still yet to come. Political dysfunction is a repeating feature of American democracy—perhaps as American as America can get. Emerging from Dr. Suri’s account of how the hope of Reconstruction and a unified nation quickly disintegrated, is a vivid—and at times unsettling—portrait of a country striving to rebuild itself, but unable to compromise on or adhere to the most basic democratic tenets.

LBJ School DC Center, Washington D.C.

The LBJ Washington Center presents Dr. Jeremi Suri, a presidential historian from the LBJ School of Public Affairs at The University of Texas at Austin. Dr. Suri paints a portrait of a country rebuilding itself as it wrestles with competing visions of democracy, race and freedom. Dr. Suri's analysis of democracy starts in 1865 when the Confederacy was militarily defeated and continues through 2022. This is the subject of his new book Civil War by Other Means: America's Long and Unfinished Fight for Democracy

Yale University, Jackson School of Global Affairs, International Security Studies

International Security Studies will host a book discussion with Jeremi Suri, Mack Brown Distinguished Chair for Leadership in Global Affairs at the University of Texas, Austin on his new book, “Civil War by Other Means: America’s Long and Unfinished Fight for Democracy.”

In this timely work, Suri examines how the United States struggled to remake its democracy following the years of the Civil War. Suri shows how the promise of a multiracial democracy was thwarted during the period of Reconstruction, how the reemergence of former members of the Confederacy in American politics after 1865 stymied the most ambitious attempts to create racial equality. This history left a legacy on American democracy, one that the United States continues to wrestle with to this day.

Limited copies of the book will be available for signing following the talk.

Please note that in-person attendance is limited to members of the Yale campus community with a Yale ID.

How Does Domestic Disorder in U.S. Affect American Foreign Policy
Domestic conflicts in the U.S., including attacks on democracy, have limited U.S. influence abroad in the past. While an overwhelming majority of Americans believe that it is important for the United States to be respected by other countries, a recent Pew survey showed 68% of Americans believe that the U.S. is less respected internationally than it was in the past. Moreover, 58% of U.S. adults expressed their dissatisfaction with how democracy is working in America going so far as to say that our political system needs a major overhaul. Dr. Suri will discuss those experiences and offer some insights for today. How should Americans adjust to the ways that domestic divisions change U.S. international power? What can we do to increase American influence, especially on behalf of democracy at home and abroad?

World Affairs Council of Dallas Fort Worth

“The Civil War may have ended on April 9, 1865, but over 150 years later, the fight for a stable democracy continues with polarizing civil tension in the United States. The fight to preserve the Union is more tightly knit with the fight for democracy than any of can imagine. What are the implications of our forgotten history and what impact does it have on our future? Join us and Suri at the Gail Koppman History lecture for a book signing and discussion on our country’s history. We’ll discuss his argument that there was never a united country post the Civil War and what emerged was a country striving to rebuild and unite, but ultimately unable to.”
